yesterday i had a speech to delivery in my comm 101 class. i was the 9th person out of 10 people to give my speech. i was nervous and hadn't properly prepared. when the speaker before you is next to give their presentation you are then instructed to go out into the hall and take that time to refresh your memory. well, when i was out in the hall, annie was giving her speech. of all the speeches we've been assigned, she's always talked about God. i'm not very religious myself but i enjoy her speeches. when i heard the clapping of the audience, my heart skipped a beat and i walked into class and delivered my speech. at the end of class annie announced that she had the letters she had talked about and wanted to pass them out to the class. apparently she had written a letter with words of encouragement to every student in the class. i got my letter and on the front it said, "Words of encouragement divinely inspired. Be blessed S."
i cornered annie after class and asked her if she had time to tell me what her speech was about. she told me that it was a speech about a story in the bible that she related to modern times. i think it was the story of mary magdalene who was about to get stoned for cheating... i think... anyways, here's what she wrote to me:
"S, when I started asking god about you, I felt like he said that he sees you as a pink rose. Well, I didn't know what a pink rose meant and when I looked it up it meant the following: Pink roses connotate grace, gentleness and gratitude. They are a joy to behold (you are a joy to behold) and they express fun and happiness. Then I continued to ask god about it and my attention was drawn to the thorns on a rose. The thorns of a rose are meant to protect the beautiful rose, they aren't purposed to hurt others, just to protect, in a sense they act as a boundary. because a "rose" is so beautiful, sometimes people get jealous and may try to destroy the rose, but that's where the thorns come into play and that's why god made them with thorns, no so that they'd hurt others, but so that they'd be protected from any attack. I don't know if this is true, but I feel like you may have taken off your "thorns" and allowed others to step past boundaries that you've put into place. Perhaps allowing them to step past your boundaries because you fear they'll be hurt or frustrated with you if you say no, or perhaps one time you had asserted your boundaries and someone took offense by it. However, no matter what the situation, I really feel like god wants you to know that those "thorns," those boundaries you put in place are there to protect you and are necessary. you can't control other people's reactions but you can protect yourself and set healthy boundaries so that others won't violate your core values. Other words, you may just find yourself tired and weary and as if people just use you to their advantage, which they shouldn't do. Youre beautiful and amazing; youre like that pink rose. it's just necessary to have healthy boundaries in relations and to maintain the right to say no. all in all I believe god wants to protect you, nurture you and see you bloom as the beautiful rose that you are."
